Int. Casa- Sotterranei e Cripta

 

Altro ambiente fondamentale  è la cripta situata al di sotto della casa ad una grande profondità.Essa si presenta molto umida, piena di muffa, polvere e priva di aperture che consentono l’ingresso della luce. L’unica fonte di luce è data dalle fiaccole in ferro situate sulle mura in pietra. La planimetria del sotterraneo si può definire labirintica per i numerosi ingressi di cui dispone per l’entrata in altri ambienti. La cripta dove Roderick e l’amico avevano deposto il corpo di Madeline, è stata progettata piccola e a pianta quadrata, chiusa in alto da un soffitto a volta a crociera ogivale. Il narratore suppone che in epoca feudale, i sotterranei erano adibiti alla funzione di carcere e trasformati successivamente in un deposito di polveri da sparo e altre sostanze combustibili. Nella scenografia ideata si è cercata di rispettare tale ipotesi, anche se come possiamo osservare dalle immagini che si è scelto di mantenere quel carattere più sacro quasi cimiteriale e decorativo. Difatti,al suo interno vi è un altare, una bara e degli arazzi oramai rovinati dal tempo e una decorazione musiva cosmatesca che riveste una superficie del pavimento. Nella parete centrale e in quella di sinistra si accede ad altri spazi, i quali presentano la stessa conformazione. strutturale della cripta descritta nel romanzo.

Underground House of Usher
